Why Is Pluto A Dwarf Planet?

For the past week me and a few friends have been working on a space project. We had to pick a question to research. Me and my group chose to research about why Pluto is a dwarf planet.

Here is our research

Pluto was downgraded to a dwarf planet in August 2006 by the International astronomical union because
it didn’t meet the three criteria for being a full - sized planet. This was because it shared it’s orbital path and hadn’t cleared it’s neighbouring region.
Pluto shares its orbital path with many objects in the Kuiper Belt

What is a dwarf planet?
A dwarf planet is a celestial body that orbits the sun, has to be big enough to be almost  a round shape and has not cleared its orbital path.

Here is my video about the project

The hardest part was painting the background for our project, but this was a very fun project.

Please comment down bellow. Thank you for reading my blog!

Our Solar System

We have been learning about the solar system. For the pas week I have been making a solar system on scratch.  We first had to find  a solar system and then remix it. I added other planets to make it look like the solar system. It was really fun. The hard bit was coding the planets.

Would you like to make your own solar system?

Korean Ahurea

In the past week we’ve been learning about different cultures. In my group I had Miriam, Pippin, Te Paea, Mana and Eva. As a group we had to choose what culture we wanted to do and we chose Korean. We had to research their traditional things they do/have such as Traditional clothing, music, games, kai, holidays, location and then beliefs and values.

After we had our information we shared on a slide, we had to make a poster about it with the information about the topics we had to research about. We also added photos.

The hard part was the poster because we had to cut out, glue and write

Here is our poster:

In my research I learnt a lot about Korean culture, it was fun.

The Great Fleet

Today for our mahi we got put into groups. My group was Te Paea, Miriam, Mana, Eva and I.

We had to research the great fleet.

The other groups had to research about the different types of Maori waka. The waka were Waka Haurua, Waka Taua, Waka Tete, Waka Tiwai and Mokihi. My group had to find out about the fleet which was when 7 different waka came to Aotearoa following Kupe. we had to research the rangatira of the waka, the names, how many waka came, what iwi came on each waka and where each waka landed. For the first 2 blocks we had to research about the 7 waka and at the end of the second block we started making a sheet of all the research we found and had to add a border with Maori patterns as well as pictures of waka. The annoying part was Mana, Eva and Te Paea barely any work.

Have you ever heard of the great fleet???

Tupaia and Captain Cook

Today we learnt about Tupaia. Tupaia was a famous navigator that helped Captain Cook navigate his way to Aotearoa. There was a part when we had to work out who got to Aotearoa faster the English or the Maori . This was difficult. The fun part was me and my friend criticizing Cook.
We had to figure out which was the better navigator, but there is no actual answer but i think Tupaia is the better navigator because Cook used a sextant, a device that helps you work out your coordinates.
Here is my learning.

Would you like to learn to navigate using a sextant?

The hard part was getting all the lines in place. This was a bit boring.

Do you know what a Kapehu Whetu is?

Thanks for reading my blog!

Rakaihautu

We have been learning about the history of the south island and the first people who got there. We chose a person to write about. Our choices were Rakaihautu, Rakaitauheke, Tutekawa and Tuhaitara. I chose Rakaihautu, here is my learning about Rakaihautu.

The hard part was that we had a bunch of year fours who did no work. I enjoyed learning about Waitaha and Rakaihautu.

Wiremu Tamihana

Today I learnt about Wiremu Tamihana.

Wiremu Tamihana - Wikipedia

Wiremu Tamihana was a christian who appointed the first Maori king, Te Wherowhero.

I took some notes about Wiremu, here they are:

Wiremu Tamihana:

Early years -

Wiremu was born in 1804 at Tamamere near Cambridge. His birth name is Tarapipipi Te Waharoa. He is from the tribe Ngati Haua. His father fought in many wars.

Christianity -

When he was a  young man he became christian and his name was changed to Wiremu Tamihana.

A Maori King -

Wiremu and others thought they needed a Maori king, someone to protect land and unite tribes. Wiremu and a dozen other people traveled the North Island trying to find a king. They chose Te Wherowhero, the chief of Waikato.

Te Wherowhero -

Te Wherowhero was the first Maori king and the chief of Waikato. He made his own flag. It was made in 1861.

Gore Browne -

At the time when the Māori were getting a king the governor was Gore Browne. He didn’t want the Māori people getting a king and called it betrayal to the queen. He said the Māori already had a queen, Queen Victoria.

The Settlers

The majority of settlers didn’t like Maori having a king because they knew it was difficult to buy Maori.

Have you heard of Wiremu Tamihana? If not i hope this blog taught you.

Doubling and Halving!

Today, in pangarau,  we learnt doubling and halving. We solved multiplication problems using doubling and halving.  We had a problem to work out and we had to double one number in the equation and one half one of the numbers.

Here is an example:

12 x 12 = 144

12 divided by 2 = 6

12 x 2 = 24 = 6 x 24 = 144

3 x 48 = 144

Or you could use:

24 x 6 = 144

48 x 3 = 144

Use whatever works best for you!

Do you know how to double and half? If not, I hope you learn from this post.

Thanks for reading!

Blogs I've Done

Today I calculated how many blog posts I've done in the past few years. One of my problems while making this was that i deleted some of my blogs and can't get them back.

It was quite confusing but eventually i did it.

I did a lot more blog post in 2020 compared to 2019.

The most blogs i did was in 2020 and the least in 2019. In my years I've blogged I've posted 20 blog posts which is not including my deleted posts.

How many blogs have you done? Would you like to calculate the average blogs you do per year?

Thanks for reading!

Histograms

We are learning about histograms.

You use a histogram to gather continuous data instead of discrete data, like a bar graph.

The only time you would use a histogram is if you were displaying continuous data.

In a histogram there aren't any any spaces in between the bars. In a bar graph there are spaces between the

bars.

Digital Portrait

W.A.L.T: Create a digital portrait of myself.

Today i created a digital portrait of myself on sumo paint. sometimes it randomly deleted and i had to restart, which was very annoying. my favorite part was tracing around my face and facial features.

Although it didn't turn out very well i'm really proud of it.

Here is my digital portrait:

There is power in small things.

Today i learnt a new whakatauiki, this is the whakatauiki: He iti hoki te mokoroa nana i kakati te kahikatea, which translates to - there is power in small things. This is what the whakatauki means to me.
This Whakatauki reminds me of  my anxieties and when i think of them i think of all the good things in life.

Tuwhitia te Hopo

This whakatauaki, to me means even if you are afraid, do it anyway, don't doubt yourself. This is a whakatauaki because the author is unknown.

Karakia

Today we learnt about Karakia. I learnt all the different occasions you would recite a Karakia, for example to cease or start the rain. the meaning of Karakia and a new Karakia and what that Karakia means. We had to come up with a way to teach people this Karakia, Iziah, Aukaha and Te Whetu did a song. Aukaha wanted to do a rap.

here is our Karakia and translation:

Kua Mutu A Matau Mahi

Kua mutu a matau mahi mo tenei wa
Manaakitia mai matau katoa. O mutu hoa. O matau whanau aio ki te Aorangi -

We have finished our work. Give support to the person who is speaking. We are friends. We are family. Be calm. Go to fielding.
People would use this as a Karakia Whakamutunga for the end of the day and the end of a hui. Anyone can use this Karakia although it is mainly used by young and old.

Here is the English rap by Aukaha.
